Like busy insects the Weta’s buzzed around the Solent / Southampton Water in the first ever UK ‘swarming’
The Weta 4,4 Trimaran (named after the Wetapunga – the world’s largest insect from New Zealand) met at Calshot Spit at the junction of the Solent and Southampton Water.
Eight boats met up on Saturday and with the wind NW force 4 gusting 5 it was agreed to cruise in the morning and fun race across to Cowes in the afternoon.
Saturday evening was spent in the Spinnaker Bar of the Cashot Activities Centre discussing the merits of the Weta Trimaran. This was the first chance for Weta owners in the UK to meet and discuss all aspects of rigging, sailing and transporting their craft and proved to be very successful.
Sunday dawned with nine boats and a forecast of NW force 5 gusting 6 veering SW in the afternoon. It was decided to double up for a cruise up Southampton Water to the docks and back, the trip taking about two hours. The Weta handled the conditions superbly with all boats unscathed and the weekend was voted a great success. Future ‘swarms’ are being planned for next year in other parts of the UK.
