Club Series turns into a Swarm

September 12th, 2023

Carolina Sailing Club Weekend Series #3 began, as our weekends at Kerr Lake often do, with Chuck and Alan going for a Friday afternoon sail. Our fun was short-circuited by a pop-up thunderstorm and a quick reach back to the beach.

We returned to the campsite with Stephanie and Gizmo the Sailor Pup.

With forecast of more rain, we turned in early, still wondering, where's Waldo?

Turns out Waldo was rigging his boat as the sun was going down so he was late arriving at the campsite.

Saturday morning we arrived at the launch area, happy about the wind, but not so happy about the radar filled with jagged yellow icons. RC postponed on shore. Isotope Catamaran sailors, Wētā sailors, and RC gathered under the shelter for socializing while waiting for the storms to pass. Alan even brought out his guitar and played a tribute to Jimmy Buffet.

Eventually the skies cleared, but alas, no wind. Everyone decided to go to a local eatery for lunch and delicious soft serve ice cream. Since we were camping, Waldo, Chuck, Alan & Stephanie returned to the beach. Noticing that a nice breeze had filled in and with some inspiration from Alice’s Pretty Bottle, Chuck decided it was time for capsize practice! Alan went along to capture the fun on video.

We may have invented a new social sail activity - Rail Riding...

Several aborted attempts later, we decided to just sail up the lake. Stephanie and Waldo launched and the fleet had a fun impromptu SWARM on Kerr Lake.

Sunday there was no wind, scattered showers, and no wind in the forecast. Waldo and Chuck improvised using a camp stove and a K-Cup to make a cup of coffee. RC gave a weather report and consensus was to call it a day and go home early.

The next CSC Series is September 23-24.
