Weta Marine is delighted to announce that the Weta has been chosen as one of the classes for the World Masters Games, to be held in New Zealand in 2017.

With more athletes than the Olympics, the World Masters Games is the single biggest multisport event on earth. Now in 2017, the event will come to Auckland New Zealand. The World Masters Games is for everyone – whether you play to stay fit, to have fun or quite simply to win. In 2017, 25,000 athletes will converge on Auckland for the event of a lifetime.

Sailing joins 27 other sports codes as one of 28 announced as an ‘Official Sport’ of World Masters Games 2017 and while the final sports programme is still to be finalised, sailing will offer racing in the Laser and Weta classes.

The Weta is a great fit for the World Masters Games. Experienced sailors will get plenty out of the boat and social sailors will have a great time without drama, even in windy conditions.

With a minimum age of 35, the World Masters Games is open to many sailors. For the global community of Weta sailors it’s a fantastic opportunity to meet and sail together in the place where it all began. The Weta was developed in New Zealand by Roger and Chris Kitchen, who will give their full support in the lead up to and throughout the regatta.

David Abercrombie, Chief Executive of Yachting New Zealand said he was absolutely delighted that sailing has been selected as a sport for World Masters Games 2017. Sports were selected following a comprehensive bid process which Abercrombie said will stand sailing in good stead to ensure they are well and truly organized and ready to deliver the highest standard event for their athletes.  “During the next two years and 10 months we will work closely with World Masters Games 2017 to make sure sailors have a great experience on and off the water.”
